A very large number of children are born with congenital gastrointestinal anomalies that are surgically treatable. Dr. Rajat also performs laparoscopic GI surgery. Pediatric gastrosurgery is broadly divided into following groups—
1- Abdominal wall defects
Gastroschisis
Omphalocele
Umbilical and inguinal hernia
2- Esophageal, Gastric and Bowel anomalies
Tracheoseophageal fistula , Esophageal atresia
Duodenal atresia, Annular pancreas
Small bowel or large bowel atresia
Achalasia and Gastroesophageal reflux disease
Hirschprung disease
Appendicitis, bowel obstruction and abdominal trauma
3- Hepatobiliary
Biliary atresia
Choledochal cyst
Hydatid cyst and other hepatic lesions
4- Anorectal
Absent/Abnormal anal opening- High or low ARM
Absent vaginal opening
Cloaca- a common opening for stools, urine and vagina in females
Some of these congenital anomalies may need multiple/staged surgeries. Nearly all of the patients can lead a normal adult life if operated on time.
